The stakes are high. The goal: A new achievement by an American man. What will it take for Jim Walmsley to win the 2022 UTMB?
There’s only one way to find out, so Walmsley is going all in. He just moved to Europe, uprooting his whole life in pursuit of this goal.
We all know that if anyone could do it, it’s Walmsley. This 32-year-old runner is a decorated enigma. He’s won the Western States 100 three times, setting the course record in 2018 and demolishing it by another 21 minutes in 2019. He has plenty of additional accolades at races of various distances around the world.
However, he’s not yet reached what he thinks is his potential at UTMB. After debuting there in 2017 with a fifth place, he DNF’d in 2018 and 2021.
The American is definitely one to watch. Be on the lookout for Part 2 of the series — we’re all eager to watch Walmsley train throughout the summer in France.
