Although it features a high-density foam that’s on the firmer end of the range, the subtle diamond texture and rounded curves make it easy to dial in the intensity. A center groove for aligning the spine and neck helps target the back and shoulder muscles. The groove also works well for rolling out the triceps, forearms, iliotibial bands, Achilles tendons, and hip flexors.
We used the center and sides of the foam roller for areas that needed higher pressure, and the curved dip on either side of the center was ideal for areas that needed more gentle rolling. That said, the foam rolling options with this roller are as broad as your imagination. One thing we noted with this foam roller’s surface material is that it tends to attract dog fur and dust from the floor — so if you’ve got furry running buddies in your household, you may want to place a yoga mat underneath while rolling.

Its smooth surface applies similar pressure to a foam roller, but you don’t have to get on the ground to use it. The foam surface feels gentle against the skin, while the rigid stick allows you to apply deep pressure to the muscle tissue, releasing knots and supporting blood circulation. The 4-inch handles on each end are grippy, making maneuvering the 10-inch massage surface easy. The stick’s length provides plenty of room for rolling out large and small muscles.
While it lacks the textured surface common to many deep tissue tools, its overall construction makes it easy to apply pressure to muscle fascia. While we couldn’t dig quite as deep into specific muscle areas as we could with other options in this guide, you can still apply high pressure to your muscles.

The five different head attachments make reaching various muscles, tissues, and tendons easy. You can adjust the intensity level depending on which area of your body you’re working on. The massager has a stall force of 60 to 70 pounds, which means the percussion will stop briefly if it is applied too much force.
This safety feature keeps you from applying too much pressure to your muscles. That said, we couldn’t get it to stall in testing. Three pressure-indicator LED lights on the speed dial illuminate as the applied pressure increases.
Depending on speed and pressure levels, the claimed battery life is about 2 to 3 hours. We found this accurate and were surprised by how quickly it recharges. When the device needs to be plugged in, the battery-level indicator turns from green to yellow.

The Ekrin Athletics B37S is nearly as quiet as the Hyperice Hypervolt 2 Pro reviewed above and was a favorite among our testing team. It has five speed settings ranging from 2,000 to 3,200 repetitions per minute (RPM) and can apply 36 to 52 pounds of force.
The highest speed level automatically varies from 2,400 to 3,200 RPM every 10 seconds to create muscle confusion. While we found the frequency change fairly subtle, but the brand claims that it can help avoid hitting a plateau in the recovery process. A blue light at the top indicates the pressure applied at each speed level.
The device is straightforward to operate. One button on the top turns it on and adjusts its speed level. Ekrin Athletics recommends using the massager for up to two minutes at a time per muscle group.
After 10 minutes of continuous use, the device will automatically shut down, though it can be immediately restarted by pressing and holding the power button. While this automatic shutdown prevents overuse, it can be an annoying inconvenience for those in the middle of a full-body recovery routine.
We liked the angled handle, which allowed us to reach awkward places more easily and provided the level of pressure we wanted. The six head attachments make it easy to dial in the type of percussive massage you want, though we did find that the silicone head would occasionally collapse if we put too much pressure on it.
Overall, we found it a versatile percussive massager that’s lightweight, ergonomic, and quiet.

It’s a fantastic recovery tool for the price and easy to toss in the car or your luggage for use away from home. It measures 6 x 5.3 x 2.25 inches. While small, this device has nearly the same power as other full-size percussive massagers. Its triangular shape is ergonomic and comfortable to hold for the entirety of your massage session, and it’s surprisingly agile as you maneuver it around to reach different muscle groups.
You can adjust the intensity of the massage using three settings: 1,750, 2,100, and 2,400 percussions per minute (PPM). We found that this device provided plenty of pressure on our muscles.
Its design is simple and intuitive. Just one button powers the device on and off and cycles through its speed levels. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery lasts up to 150 minutes before recharging, which takes approximately 80 minutes.
The single ball attachment is slightly limited compared to other percussive massagers with various attachment options. However, while it’s pared down, we found that the important features, power, portability, and ease of use still exist. As a result, it is an excellent introduction to percussive massage and a great gift for any athlete.

The significant drop in the price of the Hyperice Normatec 3 Legs over the past couple of years is a significant factor in making it our top choice in the compression boots category. While these innovative, high-quality boots have always impressed us, their price tag has kept them unattainable for most people, and most of us only got to use them at booths set up at running events.
The newest model, however, delivers the same premium recovery experience we’ve come to expect from the brand at a more competitive price. These recovery boots use dynamic air compression to circulate blood and massage the muscles. This can help reduce swelling, refresh muscles, and increase recovery speed. The whole experience is exceptionally relaxing, as well.
The system includes two zippered leg sleeves, a control unit for adjusting cycles and pressure, and a hose connecting the control unit to the two leg sleeves. To operate the system, pull the sleeves onto both legs, zip them up, and plug the hose into both boots and the control unit.
On the control unit, select the attachment you’re using (you can purchase attachments for the arms and hips separately), and then choose the amount of pressure, the zone you want to apply extra time and pressure to, and the time.
Then lean back — we recommend a recliner if you have one, though a couch or bed works just as well — relax and enjoy the slow, compressive massage. We love using the boots after a hard workout, weight-lifting, post-race, or when our legs feel extra tired. We’ve noticed they’re especially effective in giving us a “leg up” when dealing with delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after pushing a little too hard.

We love the wireless design of the Therabody RecoveryAir JetBoots. The wires and tubes of the Hyperice Normatec 3 Legs reviewed above make the whole package a bit cumbersome, but these feel much more portable, even though they’re heavy. The system includes two leg sleeves, a charging cord, and a storage pouch. We appreciate that the package includes the storage pouch.
To operate the boots, slide one on each leg and power on the control panels at the top of each boot. The two boots will synchronize automatically and simultaneously start their compression cycles. The compression cycle consists of the boots slowly inflating, first at the feet and then moving up the calves and to the thighs. Then they deflate, and the cycle starts again.
There are four different pressure levels and several different cycle options. You can set the boots to 20-, 40-, or 60-minute cycles with a 60-second flush in between or a continuous nonstop cycle that you stop when you’re ready to get up. The battery life lasts up to 4 hours before needing a recharge. Note that only one boot can charge at a time, but they recharge quickly.
Even though the boots automatically sync, we noticed that sometimes their timing is slightly off, particularly when deflating. This didn’t bother us, but it’s worth noting since it could be an issue for some. Additionally, since each boot has its own built-in control unit, they’re much heavier than other compression boots at about four pounds per boot, depending on size.
Of course, the upside of this is that there isn’t a separate control unit and cord that you must carry around and reconnect whenever you want to use them.

While many people use the tried and trusted lacrosse ball for rolling out their feet, the ProStretch Roundchucks Massage Balls have several advantages and don’t cost much more. There are a lot of options for tools to roll out the bottoms of feet, but we’ve found that nothing works quite as well as a simple ball. These have the right level of squishiness to dig into the muscles, tendons, and ligaments in the foot while still being soft enough to apply variable amounts of pressure.
These silicone balls are slightly larger than a lacrosse ball, and we found that the 2.7-inch diameter was perfect for rolling our arches. We also used them on other parts of our body, including our glutes, hips, shoulders, and back muscles.
We appreciate these balls’ versatility, as we use them for targeted acupressure, myofascial release, and rolling. We don’t really understand why they come in pairs, but it makes it easy to have one in our gym bag or car for after a run and another under our desk at home. They come with a cylindrical container and mesh bag for storage.

- Deep Tissue Massage – Deep tissue massage targets scar tissue and muscle adhesions, or knots that inhibit circulation and cause pain and inflammation.
- Fascia – Fascia is the thin connective tissue that wraps and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber, and muscle in your body. Fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin, and tight fascia can restrict movement in muscles and joints.
